Doug Aitken is an American artist whose work was selected for Desert X, an art festival based in the Coachella Valley that showcases the various works of 15 artists. Both emerging and established names feature in Desert X, and Aitken’s contribution is truly fascinating.
Titled Mirage, the installation features a typical ranch-style home in the isolated landscape of the valley. This is no ordinary home however, as the building is completely covered mirrors, creating a reflective surface offers a puzzling visual treat.
The house catches various reflections throughout the day, regularly changing as the day goes by. A lack of windows or doors really enhances the reflective nature of the piece, with the structure drinking in the surrounding landscape and losing all sense of a traditional home.
“Like a human-scale lens, Mirage works to frame and distort the evolving world outside of it. There is no single time to view this work, as each variation provides something new…,” Aitken writes. “There is no fixed perspective or correct interpretation. Each experience of this living artwork will be unique.”
Mirage will be in display until October 2017.
