On Instagram, a baker from Jakarta, Indonesia under the username “Ivenoven” posts unique-looking flower cakes that are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. These buttercream-filled cakes have been designed and sculpted to resemble real succulent plants. Every feature of the plant has been recaptured in these cakes including the needles, spines, and leaves. Ivenoven used frosting to sculpt the plant which is made of food coloring, butter, and sugar. She paid particular attention to the coloring of the cake so that it resembled the plant as much as possible. After she got the coloring the way she wanted it, a piping method was used to mold the needles, spines, and leaves into shape. These “succulent cakes” are so realistic-looking that you could put them in a garden filled with other plants and no one would be able to tell that they’re really cakes.
Ivenoven always had a passion for baking but never really found a reason to do it. In 2013, she started baking again by designing Christmas cookies as a treat for her daughter to bring to school. Her class loved the design of the cookies which motivated her mother to start baking more often. It eventually led Ivenoven to bake for a living and start her own bakery business called Zoezo Bake. This business features her own brand of cookies, artisan cakes, cupcakes, and more.
The most fascinating thing about this story is that Ivenoven has had no formal training as a baker. She taught herself out to do it and how to make these unique designs for her desserts.
